I just found a bunch of old photos! (click to view bigger) This one is me doing a kickflip in 2000: a painting called "The Light" I did in 1998: and a mural from 1997:
That's right geezers! The Awareness Geezers are now mobile and coming to a location near you (if you're on the West-Coast that is). The mural was installed on "The Art Caravan" which will be featured at various events and parties and will offer afordable items of art and clothing.
Here's the video and a few pics from "The Freedom Project", which was presented by thegluenetwork.com in association with Fuel TV. The benefit was held on April 28 at Hotel Menage in Anaheim, and supported International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency that rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, and slavery. We raised funds and awareness that night- thanx to all 700 people who came out and supported!! Speech from Arrested Development performed and 9 artists including myself painted the "Freedom" mural.
Please find attached the photos from my solo-show at Xin Boutique. More than 300 people showed throughout the night including a special guest, none other than "the love-song king" Lionel Richie! He turned out to be one of the most genuine and funniest people I've ever met, as well as being a bit of a geezer (view photo-strip attached). All of the art that was sold has been replaced with new work, so if you're in the Los Angeles area, feel free to stop by Xin to take a look. The show will be up until the end of August. Xin: 8064 Melrose Avenue (next to Fred Segal) Los Angeles, CA 90046
Special thanx to Motley Bird for the drinks, DJ Jasepi for the tunes and the Heartschallenger for the delicious ice cream and snacks, as well as Zexsports for covering the event.
While I was painting the Awareness Geezers mural on Melrose and Orange in Hollywood, this very interesting man named Jose kept coming around with interesting things to say about painting, real estate and Picasso. We both share the immigrant experience, Jose being from Spain and migrating to the US 40 years ago, and me being from Belgium and moving to Los Angeles 12 years ago...Towards the end of the day he appeared once again and said that he had something for me...a message I should add to my work...this is what he said:
Look out for the blimp in the second half of the video, covered in my artwork. Video directed by Mazik. Rest In Peace JDilla...
Obituary: New York Times February 14, 2006
James Yancey, 32, Producer Known for Soulful Hip-Hop By KELEFA SANNEH (NYT)
Published: February 14, 2006
James Yancey, the innovative and influential hip-hop producer known as J Dilla or Jay Dee, died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 32.
The cause was cardiac arrest, according to his mother, Maureen Yancey. She said he had been suffering from lupus and had recently been hospitalized for pneumonia. Mr. Yancey was celebrated for the beats he made, which tended to be warm and slightly off-kilter. On albums by Common, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, D'Angelo and his own group, Slum Village, Mr. Yancey pioneered a subdued, sometimes spaced-out form of hip-hop.
His cult of fans stretched around the world (he had an especially devoted following in Europe and Japan), and it included many of his more commercially successful contemporaries.
Pharrell Williams, from the Neptunes, once called him his favorite producer, and Common has called him ''one of the greatest ever.''
"Most refreshing find at the Shop LA event today was Belgian Street Art transplant (now a Culver City kid) - Chase. From stencil art, to paintings, to shirts, and collabs with everyone from Puma, Adidas, Levis, etc - odds are you’ve seen his murals around ~ At the event he was showing off his stencil paintings (and his funky teeth that guarantee to make you smile - see below), which have an impressively motivational 60’s/pop/stencil vibe going on, some of my favorites above and more below… See more over at the Art of Chase, and these smaller canvases could make great gifts for the hard to shop for, or last minute parties."
"We are back from Los Angeles and all I can say is THANK YOU! What an amazing trip. I want to personally thank all who made the trip what it was.
As we proceed.
“The hardest thing to do in life to send love in response to hate….”
Smog..violence…dirt…homeless..Within these surroundings we found our piece of light. From an outsiders perspective Los Angeles may appear to be glitz, glamour and fast paced. Yet as I journeyed deeper into the matrix which is LA I found something unexpected.
Looking me in the face was an amazingly painted character with the text “Remember Who You Are”. I had to ask myself, had I lost who I was in becoming who I am and who I strive to be? The answer was clearly NO. Yet the fact that this message made you think brought a smile to face. How many onlookers had asked that same question?
I introduce to you one of my new favorite artists. CHASE.
Belgium transplant and now Los Angeles resident artist Chase introduces enlightenment to those who are willing to pay attention. So wake up…you may miss something."
These geezers were painted live at an event I co-produced at MusicPlusTV.com's studio/soundstage. The night consisted of live hip-hop performances (Malkovich, Handroids, Swish, Black Silver, etc), Live painting by Kofie, Hashim and myself, open bar and dancing. The night was documented and live-webcast on musicplustv.com and should be part of their archives any day now.
"There is no master race. There is no greatest nation. There is no one true religion. There is no inherently perfect philosophy. There is no always right political party, morally supreme economic system, or one and only way to Heaven. Erase these ideas from your memory. Eliminate them from your experience. Eradicate them from your culture. For these are thoughts of division and separation, and we have killed each other over these thoughts. Only this truth can save us: WE ARE ALL ONE. Carry this message far and wide. across oceans and over continents, around the corner and around the world."
-as received and then shared by Neale Donald Walsch (Conversations With God, book 4)
My stencil paintings are now available at Virgin Megastores in these fine cities around the country: Hollywood - Boston - San Francisco - Chicago - New York (Times Square & Union Square) - Denver - Lake Buena Vista - Ontario - Orange. All paintings contain uplifting messages and are ready to hang. They make for great gifts and only cost $50 !
The above-mentioned stores are also offering a line of t-shirts I designed for both men and women, as well as a line I designed for toddlers called "Babycakes". So hurry up and get a scoop before it's gone!
Location: Westminster Street in Venice, CA. The toddler depicted is baby Max. (Note: This is a re-painted version of the original which I painted in '05)
Clothing brand X'E (http://www.xlarge.com) invited me to paint at their event, which was held on the sand in Venice. Due to a prior engagement, my time was short, so I had about an hour to paint. Just enough time to paint these geezers:
Adidas x Chase & Baracuda Hey geezers! Adicolor is an artist-collaboration program Adidas has set up to support the relaunch of a classic shoe. Artists and a select few stores were asked to participate and the collection of original and hand-painted shoes will be showcased around the world. Here are some pics of the shoe I hand-painted for the project. The "eye" is a symbol for awareness and the divine. The pattern of eyes I created represents all of us. We have more in common than we have not. We are all the One and we are all One. The shoe will be featured on the Adidas website soon, check back for updates.
